Showing Images From The Golden Pill

Solo Show of Paintings/Sculptures, April, 2004

M Modern Gallery, Palm Springs, CA

Artist’s Statement (In Retrospect):

The title refers to the idea of finding a magical cure for something. I was thinking a lot about what my art did for people. It felt a lot like a product that people could use to distract themselves from what was really going on in the world. I was depressed about the (Iraq) war and the state of the environment. I wanted these paintings to be saturated with hidden meanings so that they could somehow remind people of what was happening. Most of the paintings had text in them that was mixed up. The idea was that it would signal to people that there was something else going on. I was toying with the connection between environmental disaster and intentional aesthetic creation. I actually tried to write an artist’s statement for this show, but I finally gave up. The theme was so complex and non-linear that I couldn’t really put my finger on it. I still can’t. I learned a lot about myself from this show and I guess that sums up my philosophy about my work at that time. I was more concerned with what it meant to me than what other people thought about it.
